Results of the November 25 orientalist sale at Christie's
In a courtyard Tunis from Ferdinand Max Bredt was the big success of the orientalist sale at Christie's November 25.
The price realized was 601,251 £ (993,265 $), twice the estimated value (300,000 £ /495,600 $)
In spite of this surprising result for Bredt, whose cotation was probably underestimated compare to orientalist painters of the French an American schools, the market seems to be rather calm for classical values like Jean-Léon Gérôme, Majorelle, Ziem and Dinet whose sale didn't meet high expectations. Their values seems to be stabilized and could'nt be multiplied by 4 like it used to be a few years ago.
Some pieces of masters of orientalism like Fromentin (lot 3), Delacroix (lot 4), Lewis (lot 18) were not even sold.
Nevertheless, the total sale amount is remarkable : 10 573 250 £ (prices include buyer's premium).
